In this module you will build on your understanding of linearly-elastic structural behaviour and explore in more depth nonlinear structural behaviour. Many structures, before the point of failure exhibit so-called nonlinear behaviour. Simply put this might mean that the behaviour of the structure is no-longer linearly proportional to the load applied. This can lead to sudden catastrophic collapse that can be difficult to predict. In this module you will develop your understanding of this non-linearity by studying concepts such as elastoplastic bending, structural redundancy and collapse mechanisms and buckling of axially loaded structural elements as well as lateral torsional buckling. This module will provide you with a much greater understanding of how structures respond on the limits of their capacity.
